First, breathe deeply. During the months to come before your divorce becomes final, keep a healthy routine. Exercise, eat right, get enough sleep at night and take care of yourself. Consider others that may be affected. If you have children, your divorce is going to be just as stressful for them as for you, perhaps more.
Accept that stress, fear, frustration, anger and grief are a natural part of the divorce process.
Accept that you will feel overwhelmed at times but that there is life on the other side of divorce and that you will make it through this.
Watch out for bad advice from well-meaning people with agendas not in your best interest. Find people with whom you can confide your feelings. Friends and relatives can help but a trusted advisor or therapist who will listen without judgement may be a better choice.
We sponsor facilited divorce support for women and for men. When should you get involved? As soon as there is talk of separation. You will benefit by:
- Gaining emotional support from people who understand your emotional stress
- Learning how others are dealing with their children
- Coping with disappointed parents and other family members.
You'll perhaps be able to see more clearly whether to go on with your divorce or try to reconcile with your spouse.
